CTA: How did you get into tattooing?
Jared: I started getting heavily tattooed in my late 20’s so I was always in and out of shops, always healing a fresh tattoo or two. I had a strong background in the arts and music but I wasn’t sure if I’d make it out there in the tattoo world. I started to really take it seriously, took the leap and landed an apprenticeship.
CTA: Did you have any Artists or people who influenced you that you would like to share, shout out?
Jared : @blake.francis was a huge inspiration to me. He’s one of my favorite tattoo artists, and probably claims 1/3 of the tattoos on my body. He was always cool with me watching him and asking questions during our appointments. Some of my favorite artists are @vaclav_tattoo and @yuri.tattoos.
CTA: Share your Testimony...
Jared : I was a lukewarm Christian and Jesus was not at the center of my life. I was living life for me, and had no conviction for my sin. Tattooing felt like my own path, even though God’s plan was in the works behind the scenes and it was beyond anything I could imagine. As I grew in tattooing I started having theological and faith based convos, all while being spiritually weak and distant. I’ll never forget when a friend of mine asked me how I’m a Christian if I act like the rest of the world.
This was the first confrontation of my lukewarmness and it started to push me to check my heart. A few months later when Raise The Dead Tattoo was officially open, one of the first clients in the shop was a client of my friend Miguel, who wanted to get “raise the dead” tattooed on his hand. I jokingly made some rude comments in conversation with this client and he just stopped and said “that’s not very Christ like” - I was irritated and felt ashamed and called out, but this man changed my life by calling me higher and making my check myself and where I was at spiritually. “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” I started diving deeper into scripture and realized it was time to fully devote myself to Jesus. We all have hearts of stone until we let God give us a heart of flesh. True repentance, turning away from sin and accepting the free gift of salvation by the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. I loved the world, my flesh, and the things that separated me from God’s love. I loved these things more than I loved God. Thankfully he’s a merciful and forgiving God because I abused his grace for far too long. I let God change my heart, because I know that we can never do this alone. I stopped swearing and unclean talk, I stopped listening to music that doesn’t glorify God, I devoted myself to prayer and reading God’s word daily, and I let God shine his light in me for others to see.
Raise The Dead Tattoo’s mission is a mirror image of the gospel account where Jesus sends out his disciples to the lost sheep of Israel, to proclaim the good news of salvation to those who are willing to hear it. “Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
CTA: Briefly write about a time where you were able to share your faith , pray or encourage someone during a tattoo?
Jared : We have so many amazing testimonies to share about clients, from great conversations and planting seeds, all the way to first time church attendance, baptisms, and Christ centered marriages. We find respectful ways to talk about Jesus and share our testimonies with clients without being street preachy or pushy. Its been an amazing experience and the only way I’ll ever stop proclaiming the gospel is if they martyr me. Praise God that we have the opportunity to share the love of Jesus in this community.
CTA: Any last words of encouragement , favorite verses you would like to share?
Jared :
Preach repentance! Use words if necessary. We’re called to be set apart.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:22-25
““Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Matthew 12:33-34
“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
James 1:21-22
But most importantly, that the gospel means GOOD NEWS. We don’t live in fear or doubt or shame, we live in the truth of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He didn’t stay dead, and neither do we.
