10 years experience
Tattoo Style: American Traditional
CTA: Go to music when you are
tattooing someone ?
Tyler : 90’s country, classic rock, death metal
CTA: How did you get into tattooing?
Tyler: Tattooing came to me through a friend of my brother who was a Tattooer. He offered me an apprenticeship after I graduated college with an art degree but didn’t have a career in the art field. The inspiration came more and more as I grew in tattooing and understanding the culture.
CTA: Did you have any Artists or people who influenced you that you would like to share, shout out?
Tyler: Matt Thornton of Amor tattoo for getting me into the St. Louis tattoo scene. Shaun and Brandie Medina, the owners of Steel and Ink Studio for offering me a place in the shop to call home and treating me like family. Shout out to the legends Tony Polito and Bert Grimm for having their part in shaping traditional tattooing so that I could model my style after them. And shout out to all my St. Louis tattooers who support me and call me a friend as well as all the Christian tattooers I have made friends with through various medias and conventions. You guys are what keep me inspired and going in the tattooing world. Thank you and god bless all of you.
CTA: Share your Testimony...
Tyler: My testimony is somewhat anti climactic. I was born into a family where my grandfather was a southern Baptist pastor. My parents were different religions, with my dad being Baptist and my mother being jehovahs witness(the obviously did not work out in the long haul).
I understandingly gave my life to Christ when I was 11 years old in my grandmothers bathroom when I was contemplating life after death and my understanding of hell and separation from god really hit home. From that day forward, I weighed most of my life with a strong moral compass. I’ve spent the majority of my life in the secular crowd but always strived to be the light of Christ in those circles. Not necessarily by preaching but more so by being consistent and steadfast. Obviously life shoots you in many directions and I had stints where I was further away from god(particularly college) but never so far that I couldn’t see him, just not in great practice. Post college is when I started rebuilding my faith. Most from my upbringing but reconstructed with what I understood better as an adult. Getting married and having my son really set my soul back on fire for god and seeing the state of the world, I saw we needed him more than ever.
Within the last 3-4 years, I’ve really had the desire to actively spread the gospel, particularly to the tattoo community. Given my history of being in groups but not being of the group, this seemed to come natural to me. At 8 years old I told my grandmother I wanted to be a pastor, at 35 it finally hit me that I can be who I am and still keep my word to her. God is good and my goal is to bring god to tattooing more than ever as a tattoo Gideon.
CTA: Briefly write about a time where you were able to share your faith , pray or encourage someone during a tattoo?
Tyler : In tattooing I take a lot of time to bless clients in one sense or another but the biggest blessing for me was being able to share my faith with my co worker who asked me personal questions about god and the Christain faith. And in doing so, she is now developing her own personal relationship with Christ. It was never my intention to plant that seed but god uses us as a vessel for his glory and it has been nothing short of rewarding seeing her life become more fruitful and see happiness be a primary state of mind for her now. Where it wasn’t me but god doing that for her, I am grateful I was put in this place to express just how great god is and how much better
CTA: Any last words of encouragement , favorite verses you would like to share?
Tyler:
Life is with a relationship with him. It has humbled me and made me that much more grateful to do what I do and be around who I am.
Where this may not be my favorite verse, it’s one that has stick out to me recently and holds true in all facets of life.
Romans 8:6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
